DOCUMENTATION HAS BEEN UNCOVERED WHICH LINKS CHRISTIAN MUMMA (U8), JOHN MUMMA (U28) & JACOB B. MUMMA (424) TO A COMMON FATHER, JOHANNES MUMMA (41), SON OF IMMIGRANT PETER MUMMA (4) Key documents have been made known to me which links Christian Mumma (U8) of Springfield, Ohio; John Mumma (U28)of West Hanover Twp., Dauphin Co., PA; and Jacob B. Mumma of Lancaster County, PA (424) to Johannes Mumma, the eldest son of immigrant Peter Mumma. The breakthrough in making these connections came from Janet Louise Mumma Lyter and her son, David Lyter. They sent me the 1847 estate distribution document for the estate of Elizabeth Bower/Bauer. Further investigation has uncovered her Will, her estate inventory and the Will of her father, Nicholas Bower, all of which provide clues and valuable information. It has long been believed by many researchers that Christian Mumma of Springfield, Ohio was a descendant of Peter Mumma. It has also been speculated that John Mumma of Hanover Township, Dauphin County was a descendant of Peter Mumma. The collected documents reveals that these two men were brothers and their father was Johannes Mumma, the eldest son of Peter the immigrant. The initial document is the Will of a Elizabeth Bower which was filed in Lancaster Co. under the name of Elizabeth Bauer. A transcription of this document can be viewed at http://www.mumma.org/archives/Will-PA-Lanc-U-1- 175.pdf Elizabeth Bower wrote her Will in 1846 and identified one of her sisters as "Susanna Mumma", now deceased and leaves Susanna Bower Mumma's share to her children. Bower was the English way of writing the German surname of Bauer. The inventory of her estate http://www.mumma.org/archives/Estate-PA-Lanc-11-3- 1846.pdf lists that she was a single woman. The most revealing document is the estate distribution document, http://www.mumma.org/archives/Deed-PA-Lanc-F-7-183.pdf which was filed as a deed. In this document, all of the beneficiaries of her estate are identified and the amount of money they received, including the 5 children of her deceased sister, Susanna Bower Mumma. The children named were John Mumma; Jacob Mumma; Christian Mumma by his attorney in fact, John K. Smith; and Nicholas Conklin in right of his wife Catharine, late Catharine Mumma. Also the children of Elizabeth Mumma Smith, the fifth child of her sister were also identified and some of them listed as having a guardian, Henry Conklin. From this we identify the following children of Susanna Bower who married a Mumma and received 1/3 of her sister's estate: John Mumma Jacob Mumma Christian Mumma, represent by an attorney, [probably because of distance] Catherine Mumma who married Nicholas Conklin Elizabeth Mumma, deceased, who married John Smith Several of their marriages were written in the records of Trinity Lutheran Church of Lancaster. A transcription of the original church register for John lists the marriage as follows: "May 6, 1789, by lic. Johannes Muma und Susanna Baurerin". These entries are written in German and "Baurerin" is the feminine form of the Bauer surname. Written in English it would be "Bower". Hence, Johannes Mumma was Peter Mumma's eldest son who served as the executor of his father's estate after Peter died in 1785 in West Hempfield Township. Some Trinity Church marriages were: May 16, 1789, Johannes Mumma m. Susanna Bower Sept 8, 1818, Elizabeth Mumma m. John K. Smith Dec. 31, 1818, Christian Mumma m. Elizabeth Hass Nov. 17, 1819, Catherine Mumma m. Nicholas Conklin May 13, 1824, John Mumma m. Catharine Ament The fifth child, Jacob Mumma was a little harder to identify as there were two Jacob Mummas living in Hempfield township. Since both Jacob Mummas were about the same age and married Mennonite women, their marriages were probably never publicly recorded. A strong clue as to which Jacob Mumma was the son of Peter Mumma, the immigrant comes from a collection of papers which belonged to Stella Mumma. Stella Mumma [1882-1974] was born in Dauphin County, single all her life and served as the secretary of the "Mumma Reunion" that was held for many years in Harrisburg. She recorded many births/marriages/deaths of Mummas which she discovered through the newspapers and genealogies that were brought to the reunions. One page had the notation that the information was submitted by Jacob Divot Mumma of Mt. Joy, PA. He was the son of the Jacob Mumma listed above and grandson of John & Susanna Bower Mumma. In his genealogy listing, the 5 children of John & Susanna Bower Mumma were listed. He also noted that "Christian Mumma moved to Ohio". To add further credibility of linking these 5 people, 6 descendants of Johannes Mumma (eldest son of Peter) have participated in the DNA Surname Project. There are 2 descendants each from the branches of John, Jacob B. and Christian Mumma. In all cases, the DNA fingerprint of each of these six men match each other exactly at 2 key markers which are shared by none of the other 66 participants of the MUMMA project. This is simply further confirmation on the correctness of the connections identified above. One other interesting document is that of the Will of Nicholas Bower who died in 1874. http://www.mumma.org/archives/will-PA-Y-2-64.pdf His will identifies his children as Barbara Mumma, Mary Shopp, Susanna Bower, Catharine Bower, Jacob Bower, Elizabeth Bower, Christian Bower and John Bower. It has been previously concluded that Barbara Bower Mumma was the wife of John Mumma who founded Mummasburg in Adams County, PA. John and Barbara moved to York County in the early 1790. John disappeared from the tax rolls of Hempfield after 1788 and appeared in the York County tax rolls by 1795. The Will of Elizabeth Bower strongly suggests that Nicholas Bower was also her father. Nicholas Bower gave his "plantation" to his son, Jacob Bower. The names of the Elizabeth's siblings in her will match that of the children of Nicholas. Barbara Bower Mumma is probably missing from the Will because she moved away many years previously, both she and her husband are deceased and Elizabeth likely did not even know the names of her children. Another interesting fact about Nicholas Bower's Will is his unique identifying "mark". He always used the initials "NB" which were run together. Both he and George Anthony Mumma married daughters of John Baughman and served as administrators of Baughman's Will and all of them had large plantations near each other. This certainly suggests a very close relationship of all these families of Hempfield Township, Lancaster Co., PA. In addition, John K. Smith who was the attorney representing Christian Mumma in the settlement Deed of the estate of Elizabeth Bower was also a witness on the The following is my listing for the children of Johannes Mumma and Susanna Bower. 4 Peter Mumma 1721-1785 .+ Anna Marie ? - aft 1785 ....41 Johannes Mumma 1763-1829 - Hempfield Twp., Lancaster Co., PA ......+ Susanna Bower ? - bef 1847, m: 6 May 1789 ............411 John Mumma Abt.1790-1865 - West Hanover Twp., Dauphin Co., PA ...............+ Mary Weller Bet. 1780-1790 m: Bef. 1819 ...............*2nd Wife of John Mumma: ...............+ Catharine Ament 1800-1868 - West Hanover Twp., Dauphin Co., PA ............412 Christian Mumma 1791-1866 - Springfield, Clark Co., OH ...............+ Elizabeth Hause/Haas 1801-1876 in Springfield, Clark Co., OH ............413 Catherine Mumma 1796-1862 - Lancaster Co., PA ...............+ Nicholas Conklin 1792-1861 - Lancaster Co., PA ............414 Elizabeth Mumma Abt. 1799-Bet. 1844 & 1847 - Lancaster Co., PA ...............+ John H. Mumma have been attached in the latest database as children of Johannes Mumma and their Henry identification numbers corrected. This reconnection involved about 2500 individuals. Additional effort was made correcting some other attachment errors among the Peter descendants. If you find additional errors, please contact me. MUMMA SURNAME DNA PROJECT http://www.mumma.org/DNA.htm The Surname DNA project continues to provide very exciting and meaningful data. The DNA data confirms that Christian Mumma, John Mumma and Jacob B. Mumma were descendants of immigrant Peter as now shown by traditional documentation. The six descendants of Johannes Mumma exhibit a unique DNA fingerprint which only they share. We have also received the DNA results of another descendant of Peter Mumma, but through one of his younger sons, Frederick. However, his DNA fingerprint only matches the descendants of Johannes at one marker, not two. But, this one marker is shared by no one else in the database, again confirming a connection to Peter. This suggests that Peter's eldest son, Johannes had one unique mutation which he subsequently passed on to his sons. It is hoped that a descendant of Peter's youngest son, Peter, will step forward and participate. Such a sample should help collaborate this theory and clearly identify the DNA fingerprint of Peter descendants. Some rather startling new DNA results were also obtained from a descendant of Samuel Mumma who first appeared in Lykens, Wiconisco Twp. of Dauphin County, PA. Samuel was born about 1822 in Pennsylvania and first appears in the 1860 census of Lykens with a wife and several children. His surname was enumerated that year as MUMY. That, of course, is not an uncommon misspelling of the surname, especially since Samuel and his wife could not read or write. The DNA results for Samuel's descendant, however did NOT match the MOMMA/MUMMA DNA fingerprint. The results conclusively prove that Samuel and his descendants do NOT descend from one of the immigrant Mumma men or match the Mommas of Germany. What was further surprising is his DNA "fingerprint" exactly matched that of fellow with the surname of MUMMEY. This MUMMEY family is first found in Ringtown, Schuylkill County. The distance between Ringtown and Lykens is only 40 miles so it is very likely that they are closely related and share an unknown recent common ancestor. To further complicate the issue, there was/is another MUMMEY family living in the Ringtown area at the same time and a DNA sample from this other MUMMEY family did not match the MUMMA fingerprint or the first MUMMEY fellow. Unfortunately, for both the Lykens Mumma and the Ringtown Mummey, little early documented data can be found for these families. Anyway, this is the first documented case where a branch using the MUMMA spelling does NOT descend from one of the identified Mumma immigrants and are not closely related. Because Samuel could not read or write, the phonetic pronunciation of his Genetic Surname must sound something like Mummey or Mumma and his surname was simply misspelled as Mumma. Results were also received for a fellow whose surname is GARBUTT. His grandfather was adopted by a Garbutt family who lived in Wiconisco Twp. of Dauphin County. He is searching for his “genetic” surname. He has a Dauphin County marriage record for his grandfather which listed his surname as MUMMY. Thus, he too participated in the DNA study, believing that MUMMY was really a misspelling of MUMMA. His DNA results were conclusive. His DNA did not match the MOMMA/MUMMA fingerprint, nor did it match either of the two MUMMEY participants. Since his grandfather lived in the Dauphin/Schuylkill area, we were confident he would have matched one of the DNA fingerprints, but it didn’t even come close. This was a great surprise. Unfortunately his DNA did not closely match anyone else who is currently listed in the FTDNA database so he continues to search for his "genetic" surname and ancestors. Some of you may have heard about a National Geographic project studying human migration patterns - called the GENOGRAPHIC PROJECT. The company I have used for analysis of the MUMMA DNA, Family Tree DNA, is performing all of the analytical work for this project. The Genographic project is using the first 12 markers that our project has used. Because the markers are the same, I have joined that project and authorized FTDNA to transfer my DNA results to that project. I have not really learned anything new that I didn't already know, but the data will help contribute to this world wide project. The Mumma/Momma families belong to what is called the R1b Haplogroup, the most commonly found group which settled in Europe centuries ago. Anyway, by joining the Genographic project for a nominal fee to transfer my data, they have sent me a migration map for the R1b Haplogroup. You can view the migration map at http://www.mumma.org/dna/R1bMigrationMap.pdf It is a large file (786Kb) so people with dialup connections may not want to wait for the file to load. The data table lists the Haplogroup for all of the MUMMA project participants. All men who are MOMMA/MUMMA descendants belong to the Haplogroup R1b, so their migration map will look identical to mine. The DNA data and results are uploaded to the web site on a regular basis and you can view the results by going to http://www.mumma.org/DNA.htm It is most exciting and rewarding to now be able to conclusively determine whether or not two men are closely related within the last few thousand years. If anyone of you are interested in becoming a participant of the Mumma Surname DNA project, a "sign-up" link in available on the DNA results web page. MEET BOB MOOMAW & THE HIPPIE MEMORIAL! Of course the most significant change in this database is the connection of the descendants of Christian Mumma, John Mumma and Jacob B. Mumma to Johannes Mumma, the eldest son of immigrant Peter. and attached as children of immigrant Peter’s eldest son, John Mumma. This change involved 2500 individuals. o Other changes, additions and corrections which people submitted were made to the database. Several smaller "twigs" have been added which have been discovered when searching the census records. Their connections are unknown. If you can assist in connecting any of the following branches and twigs, please contact me. Thanks o The database information shown below can be viewed anytime when you navigate to the database.
