Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2002 Hello Mumma researchers, cousins, family and friends - 2nd MAILING OF THIS MESSAGE This is a second mailing from my secondary ISP because my primary ISP has held the original mailing for over 18 hours. It is either in the big cyber trash can or they may send it at a later time, so I apologize in advance if you receive another copy as you did of Bulletin 18. Over 600 carbon copies of the same message seems to cause them problems. FEBRUARY 2002 [If you don't care to receive future Bulletins, please send me a message and I will remove you from this distribution list. These messages are sent out on a random basis when I feel there is something useful to communicate to everyone. There are over 650 people receiving this message.] HUMOROUS 1908 NEWSPAPER ARTICLE FREMONT COUNTY, IOWA, HERALD. May 15, l908. The most anyone received was $15.40 (James Nordstadt). Most of these gophers probably would have been those now declared on the "Endangered List"--those which were unique to the Loess Bluffs of western Iowa. It would appear they received 10 cents for each gopher trapped. Unfortunately, it has been very hard to reach the web site and Dick has not been very responsive to e-mail messages. I hope this is a sign of change. We still need one or two MUMMEY men to participate in the DNA surname testing program so we can definitively conclude whether or not the Mummey and Mumma families share a close common ancestor. " Just wanted everyone to know that the Mummey web site, long not accessible for technical reasons, has been relocated and is now available again. It is now at www.fruitjar.org/Mummey and will remain there permanently. Let me know if anyone has any questions or sees any problem with the site. Also note my new email address. Thanks. Dick Cole " DNA SURNAME TESTING PROGRAM The DNA Surname Testing Program continues. The results have been delayed due to technical difficulties at the laboratory so there is nothing new to report at this time. The next update will include: o Addition of the results from 5 new participants o Minor corrections of the existing data o Adding new locus identification numbers just released by Family Tree DNA o Reporting of the phase II results for 4 men who have had 30 loci analyzed o Reporting of the results of 9 additional loci measured for all previous participants. o I will continue to contribute the extra costs ($40) for the NEW "extended 21 loci test" for any MUMMA surname men who signs up for the "standard 12 loci test" at $165. The use of 21 loci enhances our ability to potentially group men by family trees. TIPS FOR SEARCHING US CENSUS FILES I know that many of you have either bought various census CDs that are offered or you subscribe to the Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com census files. I too have a number of these CDs and I recently subscribed to Ancestry Census on-line images. After spending a number of days doing extensive searches for people I know were living in a specific area, this experience reinforced the fact that you must be very creative when trying to locate your ancestors. We are facing several problems. First, the census taker was not always the most literate himself (before equal opportunity) so he wrote down whatever he thought he heard the person say. Many of our ancestors were not literate and were unable to assist the census taker with a "correct" spelling. Then another problem arises with the information written by the census taker must be transcribed. The transcriber only has a few seconds to look at a name and then record what they saw. The MUMMA surname is easy to see if you know what you are looking for, but to the transcriber, they are looking at thousands of scribbled names. As a result, the common errors are to interpret an "m" as a "in" or "w" or "n", an "a" as "e" or "i" or "u", and similar errors. Hence, be sure you use "wildcard" searches and try variant spelling such as Numan, Numaw, Munna, Muinma. The message is to check all possible (or impossible) spelling variants. DATABASE CHANGES A new database was uploaded to the web site on February 16, 2002 and it now includes 48,425 individuals/descendants. Some of the additions, changes and corrections are quite significant and I would like to thank all of you who supplied corrections and additions: o Revised the entire Fulton/Franklin County, PA Mumma branch. This is an interim revision because Pamela Mumma has offered to carefully review, revise, edit and enhance the information associated with this line. In addition, I was able to merge the data for James Elmer Mumma (previously listed as unattached tree U47) that I mentioned in the last bulletin. One Fulton County Mumma descendant recognized James as his great uncle. Thanks Bob Mumma for your sharp eyes! At least I know someone reads what I write. o Added the descendants of Jacob H. Mumma [U49], born in Lancaster County, PA in the early 1800s supplied by Joe & Barb Murphy. Jacob's children include David H. Mumma (b. 19 Jun 1841), Amos, Jacob & Mrs. Joseph Ogelsby. He has been assigned reference number U49. If you can help identify this family, please contact me. o Added additional and expanded information was added about the descendants of Henry Muma [U43] who was born about 1788. He is buried in the Swamp Reformed Church Cemetery located in West Cocalico Township of Lancaster County, PA. He and his family resided in West Cocalico Township until the late 1800s. While working with one of Henry's descendants, Dougald MacArthur, additional information discovered allowed me to identify and attach the previously unconnected line of Jeremiah/Lemon Mummah [U33]. We still are unable to attach Henry to one of the main branches. o Replaced all of the Mumaws from Luzerne County, PA with a new file submitted by Jean Corazza. The new file contained a much larger number of descendants of John Mumaw [U22] (b. abt 1787). About 20 obituaries were added. o Added the branch of George Mumma [U18] who was born in Dauphin County, PA about 1840. His son, Elias Allen Mumma migrated to Custer County, NE. o Other additions and corrections were supplied by many people. If you submitted changes, revisions or additions and they do not appear in this update or are incorrect, please let me know and I will attempt to correct the problem. All of the people in the Internet database are contained within the various "Mumma Trees". If any of you can be of assistance linking the various trees together, your help would be appreciated. The cousin marriages between descendants of Leonard, Jacob and Christian Mumma, now prevent me from easily determining the number of people in each of their trees as everyone is summed in a single tree DATABASE TREE INFORMATION Indiv's Desc's REF# Top Person in a particular tree + notes ------- ------ ---- --------------------------------------- 40890 23595 2 Leonard /Mumma/ b. bet 1690-1700 (1732 immigrant) * * 1 Jacob /Mumma/ b. 1685-1690 (1731 immigrant) 1251 829 U21 Jacob /Muma/ b. abt. 1750 (Canadian Mumas) 1215 794 4 Peter /Mumma/ b.
