Date: Sun, 23 Dec 2001 Hello Mumma researchers, cousins, family and friends - MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR [If you don't care to receive future Bulletins, please send me a message and I will remove you from this distribution list. These messages are sent out on a random basis when I feel there is something useful to communicate to everyone. There are over 650 people receiving this message.] "ALONG THE BANKS OF JACOBS CREEK" I am pleased to announce that reprints of the 133 page, 8 1/2 by 11 inch, paperback book entitled "Along the Banks of Jacobs Creek - A Genealogy of a Mennonite Community", written by Winfried Paul, are available for sale. The book provides genealogies of Mennonite families who settled in the area along with other German origin families. Jacobs Creek is the dividing line between Westmoreland and Fayette Counties. Of interest to Mumma researchers is the fact this is where George Mumma (1762-1835), son of George Anthony Mumma raised his family. Most of Winfried's Mumma material came from Richard Huffman's 1971 book entitled "the George Mumma Genealogy". Most of the data is contained in the MUMMA Internet database, but it does contain other limited information. This book will be especially useful and interesting for the descendants of George Mumma because the book also lists the genealogies of the other local Mennonite families with whom many of George's descendants intermarried. Many family names are mentioned, but these are the ones given in detail. Here is the complete list of families profiled in the book: DETWEILER (5 pages); ESHELMAN (3 pages); FOX (6 pages); FREED (4 pages); FRETZ/FRETTS (6 pages); FUNK (8 pages); LOUCKS (10 pages); MUMMA/MUMAW (6 pages); NEWCOMER A (11 pages); NEWCOMER B (5 pages); OVERHOLT, Martin (5 pages); OVERHOLT, Henry (9 pages); RUTH (3 pages); SHELLENBERGER/SHALLENBERGER (4 pages); SHERRICK (11 pages); STAUFFER (9 pages); STONER (11 pages); TINSTMAN/TINTSMEN (4 pages); YOTHERS(7 pages) John Roose was given permission by the author to reprint the book and offer it for sale as cost. If you are interested in a copy, send a check for $30 per copy to the address below and please mention you heard about it from the MUMMA web site or me. John Roose 315 College Avenue Lancaster, PA 17603-3317 E-mail jbroose@hotmail.com DNA SURNAME TESTING PROGRAM The DNA Surname Testing Program continues and I will be sending out another bulletin within a week or so devoted to this subject. The highlights will include: o Addition of the results from 5 new participants o Minor corrections of the existing data o Adding new locus identification numbers just released by Family Tree DNA o Reporting of the phase II results for 4 men who have had 30 loci analyzed o Reporting of the results of 9 additional loci measured for all previous participants. o Announcement that I will pay the additional cost ($45) for the NEW "extended 21 loci test" for any MUMMA surname men who sign up for the "standard 12 loci test"($165). The standard list price for a 21 marker test is $279. The use of 21 loci enhances our ability to potentially group men by family trees. My offer to cost-share the 21 marker test will only extend through the month of January. P.S. - A DNA Y-chromosome test makes a great last minute stocking stuffer or a birthday gift for that father/husband who has everything. Perfect for any occasion and their results will be printed on a certificate suitable for framing. Again, the cost for a 21 loci test is $165 through January. DATABASE CHANGES A new database was uploaded to the web site on December 23, 2001 and it now includes 47,525 individuals/descendants. Some of the additions, changes and corrections were: o Added the line of David Mumma (b.~1788/90) who appears in Franklin County, Pennsylvania about 1810. This unattached line is called U46. David and his descendants migrated to Fulton County around 1840's. Jacob Mumma (b. 1811) and George W. Mumma, David's descendants, were attached to David and their references renumbered from U23 & U24 to U46. This line is being actively worked on by Pamela Mumma and she is correcting and updating the combined information supplied by other Fulton County researches, including Mike Horton and Ron Rose. o In addition, I added a David Mumma, Jr. as a son to the David Mumma listed above. The son of this David Mumma Jr. his wife and daughter died tragically when a tornado smashed into their farm house near Pauline, NE in 1903, killing 6 people. They were have an engagement dinner party for their daughter, fiance and several friends. o Added descendants of Theodicia Medley [2213231] o Added the descendants of James Mumma (b. 1880 in Lancaster, PA), but died in Coralville, IA. Most of his children ended up in Illinois, some around Decatur. One descendant is participating in the DNA Surname project. o Other additions and corrections were supplied by many people. If you submitted changes, revisions or additions and they do not appear in this update or are incorrect, please let me know and I will attempt to correct the problem. All of the people in the Internet database are contained within the various "Mumma Trees". If any of you can be of assistance linking the various trees together, your help would be appreciated. The cousin marriages between descendants of Leonard, Jacob and Christian Mumma, now prevent me from easily determining the number of people in each of their trees as everyone is summed in a single tree DATABASE TREE INFORMATION Indiv's Desc's REF# Top Person in a particular tree + notes ------- ------ ---- --------------------------------------- 40759 23532 2 Leonard /Mumma/ b. bet 1690-1700 (1732 immigrant) * * 1 Jacob /Mumma/ b. 1685-1690 (1731 immigrant) 1247 827 U21 Jacob /Muma/ b. abt. 1750 (Canadian Mumas) 1206 792 4 Peter /Mumma/ b.
