Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 Hello Mumma-Moomaw researchers, cousins, family and friends - [If you don't care to receive future updates of this type, please send me a message and I will remove you from this distribution list.] DATABASE STATUS - I uploaded a revised Mumma database to the Web site on February 14th. It now contains a little over 40,000 individuals, of which 13% carry the Mumma name or one of the many spelling variations. These people are contained within 16 Trees as follows: Tree Information Indiv's Desc's REF# Top Person ------- ------ ---- ----- ---------- 32021 21152 2 Leonard /Mumma/ b. The second column represents the number of Mumma descendants in the Tree. The difference between these two numbers typically represents the number of spouses & spouse's parents in that Tree. The next column is the assigned Reference number. As a reminder, each Mumma descendant is given a "Henry" number that is based on their Mumma parent's number. A person's Reference number is their Mumma parent's number to which is added the person's birth order number, i.e. if the first born child, a 1 is added. The beginning number of the reference number will either be a 1, 2, 4, U, or an E. A beginning number of "1" means that people descend from the 1st Mumma immigrant, Jacob Mumma in 1731. If there is a 2, then the person descends from the 2nd Mumma immigrant, Leonard Mumma who arrived in 1732 while a 4 means the person descends from the 4th Mumma immigrant, Peter Mumma in 1748. The number 3 is reserved for descendants of Johann Lorentz Momma who arrived in 1747. There are no identified descendants of Johann, although we know he had children. If there is a "U" at the beginning of the reference number, that represents an "Unidentified Tree" and we have simply assigned this tree an arbitrary number, until we are able to determine to which immigrant tree these people should be attached. An "E" or "K" is reserved for European Momma and Kettenis families. The last individual in the group is "A .Hog" who I use as a test individual to insure proper transfer and display of data. Therefore, the reference number is useful to quickly determine to which immigrant a person descends and how many generations away from them. If there are eight digits, then it is the 8th generation. Also, as you can see, there is still some work to be done with the early generations to get all of the Mumma Trees properly attached. These Henry Reference numbers were used in the Moomaw/Mumma Genealogy book by Robert A. Moomaw. Some of the major changes for this database update have been the additions and corrections that many of you have submitted for inclusion in the database. In addition, Peter Mumma b. ABT 1772 and his descendants were attached to John Leonard Mumma as REF# 296 (hence Peter is the 6th child of John Leonard Mumma who was the 9th child of the immigrant Leonard Mumma #2). I have scanned the signatures of Jacob Mumma, (b 1685-1690) and Leonard Mumma (b. ABT 1694) that were made at the Philadelphia Courthouse the day after they arrived in America in 1731 and 1732 respectively. These signatures are shown in the "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" by Strassburger and Hinke. The signatures can be viewed by going to the immigrants pages in the Mumma database. The top signature was on "List B" and the bottom signature was shown on "List C". These were Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Abjuration. A tentative new line that had been a part of U28 was attached to the immigrant Peter line. In addition, the immigrant Peter line was completely renumbered with Peter being given the number "4". CURRENT ACTIVITIES - I am currently working on several projects. One is the Mumma origins in Europe. To this end, I am presently studying the church records from the Grosskarlbach region, in hopes to uncover some additional facts that might help determine whether the immigrants Jacob, Leonard and Peter were brothers or closely related. I strongly feel that is the case and will present findings sometime this year. I am also still analyzing the information I obtained in Germany this last Fall. Likewise, I am doing an in depth study of David Mumma [25]. This David is the one who married a lady in Germany and the church records mention that he was a widower from America, but was born in Grosskarlbach. There are lots of strange coincidences surrounding David's supposed marriage trip to Germany in 1788 and I am trying to satisfy my curiosity. I am obtaining some help from my new German acquaintances. FUTURE PROJECT - "Records & Data Archive" I would like to share with you one new project that I plan to launch when I have some available time. It is to establish a Mumma "Records and Data Archive" on the Mumma web site. I envision this as being a place where documents, such church baptismal, marriage, and death records; Wills; land records; census, obituaries or other similar documents can be indexed and stored for easy retrieval and viewing. It seems a shame that so many people have been to various courthouses, churches, graveyards, etc and obtained such information, but we have no way to easily share the information. I found this especially true when hunting for David Mumma's will, etc. I envision some of the records as being "accurate transcriptions" of the original documents, while others may be scanned images of the originals. I think this will prove to be a valuable resource not only for ourselves, but future Mumma researchers. I am probably biting off more than I can chew. The only way that this project will work is if everyone is willing to share and help, especially with the transcribing of wills, etc into electronic format. Within a month or so, I hope to have some test pages available for all of you to evaluate. Enough for this message...........Doug 1
